She Waits by the Gray Havens Lyrics Meaning

The Gray Havens is one of my favourite bands, and their song “She Waits” is just another reason why I love them.

The lyrics have such a depth to it, that it’s meaning isn’t apparent after the first listen. I’ve included the lyrics below before I dig into what the lyrics mean to me.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Dressed in chains, now she waits
Looking back upon that day
When the dawn first held its gaze
Upon the son and the daughter’s face

[Verse 2]
But strange now it seems
Like some dark and distant dream
Still, she hopes and longs to be
Once again, and finally free

[Chorus]
So she waits, she waits
She waits
So she waits, she waits
She waits

[Verse 3]
She’s seen empires come and go
Watched the kingdom’s children grow
Sparks and embers far from home
Born to shine, and to behold

[Verse 4]
‘Cause on her chain is a lock and the key
Is the radiance she will see
From the light that’s gonna be
Cast from the sons and the daughters free

[Chorus]
So she waits, she waits
She waits
So she waits, she waits
She waits

[Interlude]

[Bridge]
She’s a captive ’til she sees
By the morning light
Redeemed sons and daughters

[Chorus]
She waits, she waits
She waits
She waits, she waits
She waits
She waits, she waits
She waits
She waits, she waits
She waits

[Outro]
It’s been a long time coming
But she hopes and she hopes for
It’s been a long time coming
But she hopes and she hopes for

She Waits Lyrics Meaning

The song is about Creation, and how “She” waits for the Sons and Daughters of God to be revealed and fully free. And once they are revealed the light that shines from their lives unlock the chains that have bound her since the fall.

The song’s lyrics expound on Romans 8:19-23

For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. 20 Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, 21 the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. 22 For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.

The lyrics that led me to this meaning

Verse One

She dressed in chains (captivity), but while she’s in this place she’s remembering the time when the dawn (YHWH) first held His gaze on His son (Adam) and daughter’s face (from the Garden of Eden before the fall).

Verse Three

She’s been around for a long time (seen empires come and go) and watched the Kingdom’s children grow. We’re sparks and embers scattered across creation that’s been placed on earth to shine in the darkness and once again behold the Father’s face.

Verse Four and Five

She’s been waiting for this day, because our final revelation is the key that will release her from her chains, where she is no longer subject to futility, death and decay.

Final comments

I wept at the beauty of the song the moment it was revealed, so it is with great joy that I share the meaning of the lyrics and the video on the song:

I'm a digital marketer by trade, and a Christian by belief. If you were to be a fly on our office wall, you might not believe that I am the latter by the way I only partially achieve cuss-word replacements. I believe that Jesus blew people's expectations of what God looks out of the water and my hope is that I'll continue this tradition. I also believe in Jesus, and that the only Mountain is YHWH. I don't apologise for this part, because I have a deep appreciation and respect for the character of the one true God who saved my life. Over, and over, and over again. Hopefully your beliefs about a cruel, unjust God will be battered to unrecognisable bits as you read the content I create. If it doesn't, please, for the love of all that's good and holy, write it off as uninspired.
